The best San Diego locations for golden-hour portraits

Golden hour is the last stretch of light before sunset, when everything turns warm and soft. It's my favorite time to shoot, especially on film. Here are four places around San Diego I keep coming back to, and who each one suits.

Sunset Cliffs

The coast at Sunset Cliffs faces west over the ocean, so the evening light comes straight in off the water. There's a path along the edge of the rocks with big sky behind you, which makes it a natural fit for couples and engagement sessions. I shot Aaron and Sam here, and I still remember how blue the sky was that day. Wear shoes you can walk in and we'll stay well back from the edges.

Best forcouples, engagements, anyone who wants the ocean in the frame.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park has warm walls, arches, and old architecture that glow in late light. It's where I photographed Jackie and Albert in vintage football kits for Retro Locker at golden hour. There's a lot of variety in a small area, so it works well when you want a few different looks in one session.

Best forportraits, personal branding, and brands that want a classic backdrop.

SDSU

For San Diego State grads, campus is the obvious choice, and it's beautiful. When I photographed Magaly, we found arches along one of the pathways with golden light coming right through them. Shooting on campus puts your milestone right where it happened, and your family can join in.

Best forgraduation sessions.

The hills in El Cajon

When I photographed Laurel, we drove out to a preserve in El Cajon. Desert plants, old wood fences, dry grass, and a golden hour that was so golden. It feels quiet and wild, a little away from everything, and the backlight through the grass is hard to beat.

Best forportraits that want an open, natural feel.

Your spot

Some of the best sessions happen somewhere that means something to you. Anywhere in San Diego County is included, so if there's a place that feels like you, tell me about it. Every session includes a style consult, where we plan outfits and locations together on our planning call, and we'll time the shoot around the light.
